The "acute phase" of the Covid-19 pandemic will end this year if the target of vaccinating 70% of the world's population is met, the Director-General of the World Health Organization said today.

"We estimate that the acute phase will end this year, provided of course that 70% of the world's population is vaccinated by mid-year, around June or July," Tedros Adanom Gebrejesus, who is on an official visit to South Africa, told reporters.

"It's up to us () It's a matter of choice," he added. Tedros visited the laboratories of Cape Town-based biotechnology company Afrigen. There, the first mRNA technology vaccine for Covid-19 in Africa was prepared. This vaccine, based on the genetic code of the new coronavirus provided by Moderna, will be ready for clinical trials in November and is expected to be licensed in 2024.

Tedros expressed confidence that this vaccine will be cheaper and adapted to the conditions of the African continent. Afrigen's project is supported by the WHO and the international Covax mechanism for equal access to vaccines. Only 11% of Africans have been vaccinated to date.

The continent will need to increase this sixfold to reach the target of 70% by the end of the first half of 2022.
