Epidemiological indicators continue to show stabilisation with officials expecting a further drop in daily cases in the coming days. However, attention is not going away from the hospitals, although the more the cases fall, the better the hospitalization picture will improve.

According to yesterday's announcement by the Ministry of Health, the situation in state hospitals has improved. 221 patients COVID-19 hospitalizedi, of which 75 in serious condition. A percentage of 70.59% of inpatients have no history of vaccination.

Today, members of the Scientific Advisory Committee are attending the scheduled weekly meeting with the Minister of Health where they will reassess epidemiological data and numbers. As we are informed, during today's meeting it is expected to discuss, among other things, the test to stay measure, which was implemented yesterday.

Speaking to the Cyprus Times the member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia, Dr. Petros Karagiannis said that we are still on the right track.

"There is stabilization in the daily numbers of cases while we see some decrease in hospitalizations, but unfortunately deaths are recorded," he noted. "We would expect perhaps a greater decrease in cases but it seems that there has been a feed from some sectors," he added, expressing the assessment that we will see a drop in the coming days.

Regarding the possibility that the stabilization of numbers and hospitalizations could translate into some relaxations, Dr. Karagiannis stressed that the data are constantly being evaluated and no decision will be made that involves risk. "Maybe if we saw the numbers coming down a little bit in the next few days, some considerations can be made," he stressed.

Finally, asked about the example of the United Kingdom and the complete lifting of the restrictive measures announced by Boris Johnson starting next Thursday, and whether we are far or close to a return to normality, Dr. Karagiannis explained that caution is needed for the time being, explaining that such a decision involves great risk, and stressed that we still have a long way to go before we reach that point.

However, for the first time, the first promising message from the World Health Organization came on Sunday after according to an assessment by the Director of the Agency "it is likely that Europe is nearing the end of the pandemic."
