March 8 is the day dedicated to all the women of the world and there is a very good reason for this.
So, women may be honored, but apart from the flowers and gifts, we should not forget the essence of the matter, namely the sacrifices and achievements made by women from all over the world for more than a century.
Beyond that, the aim of the Day is to remind us that women should have equal rights with men, in all areas.
What happened on March 8, 1857
March 8 was established as Women's Day in commemoration of a major protest held on March 8, 1857 by textile workers in New York City, who demonstrated demanding better working conditions. It was one of the first movements for women's rights.
International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1909 on the initiative of the US Socialist Party and in 1911 it was adopted by the Socialist International.
In Russia after the October Revolution, Lenin was persuaded by the feminist Alexandra Kolodai and established March 8 as an official holiday in the country, but soon the political background of the celebration faded and now Women's Day is celebrated around the world as an expression of love and appreciation for the fairer sex.
Since 1975, Women's Day has been held under the auspices of the United Nations to highlight women's rights around the world.
Why it was established
When the day was first established, women from various countries demanded the right to vote, which was first officially granted to women in the British colony of New Zealand in 1893.
However, it took nearly a century for women in Saudi Arabia to gain this right, as in 2017 they were given public office and equal employment opportunities with men.
