What changes to the European vaccination certificate New rules for travel Nine months validity for travel in the EU
From yesterday, 1 February, the amendment to the regulation on the digital certificate COVID-19 and the provision of a 270-day acceptance period for vaccination certificates entered into force.
More specifically, according to the new rules, set out in the Commission's delegated act of 21 December 2021, Member States must accept vaccination certificates for a period of 270 days (9 months) from the completion of the initial vaccination series.
For single-dose vaccines, this means 270 days from the first and only dose, while for two-dose vaccines, it means 270 days from the second dose.
All Member States to rapidly implement the common rules
In order to ensure a coordinated approach, Member States should not accept vaccination certificates indicating the completion of the initial vaccination series if more than 270 days have elapsed since the administration of the dose indicated on them. At the same time, and in order to ensure a coordinated approach, Member States should not, for travel purposes, provide for an acceptance period of less than 270 days. Within this standard acceptance period, vaccination certificates indicating the completion of the initial vaccination series should continue to be accepted by a Member State, even if that Member State is already providing booster doses. However, the Omicron mutation has already spread across Europe and it is time to see an end to the additional travel measures that some Member States have taken in recent weeks, making travel more difficult and less predictable across the EU," EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou and Justice Commissioner Didier Raiders said in a written statement a week ago when updating the recommendation.
"We now call on all Member States to quickly implement the common rules to ensure coordination and clarity for our citizens and travellers," said Kyriakidou and Raiders, noting that "the more than 1.2 billion certificates issued testify to the success of this tool, which has been developed across the EU and on a global scale," they added.
