Housing, water and electricity are the biggest household expenses in Cyprus and the EU
Expenditure on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels accounted for 25.7% of household expenditure in the European Union in 2020, having increased by 2.2 percentage points compared to 2019, according to data released by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office.
Compared to 2019, there were also increases in the categories of expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages (up 1.8 percentage points to 14.8%) and on furniture and household equipment (up 0.5% to 6.0%).
As mentioned, these increases are related to the restrictive measures imposed on EU member states. The restrictions also affected other expenditure categories, such as "restaurants and hotels" (down 2.7 percentage points to 6.0%), transport (down 1.5 percentage points to 11.6%) and leisure and culture (down 0.9 percentage points to 7.8%).
In Cyprus in 2020, the largest category of household expenditure was on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (18%). This was followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (14.1%), restaurants and hotels (12.9%), transport (12.5%), other goods and services (10.2%), recreation and culture (6,8%), furniture and household equipment (5.8%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (5.6%), clothing and footwear (5.1%), education (3.6%), communications (2.9%) and health (2.5%).
