"The easiest thing for us would be to do a lockdown" says Health Minister What he says about measures and meeting with experts

At an event held by the Larnaca Technical School, Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandela made statements on the pandemic.

  • HRH: "If measures are not respected... tightening is inevitable".
  • Putting down numbers... The Gatherings-Test-Vaccinations trifecta in focus ahead of holidays

In response to a question as to whether a decision to tighten measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 is expected at the meeting with the Scientific Advisory Committee, the Health Minister replied that he expects to listen to the experts
and that all their recommendations will be taken to the Cabinet tomorrow, Tuesday 21 December, so that a decision can be taken accordingly.

Asked about family tables over Christmas, the Minister replied. But I want to say one thing. In September when schools opened no one thought we would be here today listening to carols.

The Government and the Cabinet Office took appropriate action in August and we are here and our schools are open. We all need to look at what is happening in other countries, what is happening in our neighbouring countries. We see the example of the Netherlands, we see what is happening in the United Kingdom, we see what is happening in other countries and we see what is happening in our country. So let us not reset everything, let us all be optimistic, let us all, now that it is the holidays, put water in our wine and look at the big picture.

Let us leave our ego and see what we have to do for the good of the world, for the good of our country, for the good of all these children who had the opportunity to be here today and sing carols."In response to a reporter's remark that he too should put water in his wine so that people can have Christmas, the Minister said that the first person to put water in his wine is himself, and that he understands people's concerns. He added that at the same time there is "a great responsibility to keep the country open, businesses open, the economy open and give people the opportunity to have Christmas with their loved ones."

Hajipandela added: "

The easiest thing for us would be to do a lockdown like they do in other countries and there would be no problem.

But we are trying the hard way, to implement the measures that we have to implement and as it seems at this particular moment the measures are having very good results."
