Washington accuses North Korea of developing a new intercontinental ballistic missile

North Korea used a relatively new intercontinental ballistic missile system in the February 26 and March 4 tests, a senior U.S. government official said yesterday, calling it a serious escalation that requires a unified response from the international community.

North Korea froze its ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) tests, as well as its nuclear tests, in 2017 after it launched its first missiles capable of reaching the United States. It has not since conducted a nuclear weapons test, but Kim Jong Un has warned of a return to testing both. The new system included an ICBM-capable platform but did not exhibit intercontinental range in the launches, which were likely intended to test elements of the system before a full-range launch, possibly disguised as a space rocket launch, the official (who was not named) told reporters.

The missile system was unveiled on October 10, 2020, during a parade in North Korea and at a defense exhibition in Pyongyang in October 2021, according to him.

Yesterday, the official North Korean news agency reported that Kim Jong-un said Pyongyang would launch a number of spy satellites in the coming years that would provide real-time information on the military movements of the US and its allies. Military analysts report that North Korea appears poised to proceed with a satellite launch that would involve the use of the same banned ballistic missile technology used in intercontinental ICBMs.

The U.S. has decided to publicly disclose this information and share it with its allies because we prioritize strategic risk reduction and we strongly believe that the international community must respond with a unified voice and oppose further deployment of such CNA
