"Over half of adults in the EU have done the booster dose for covid. 82% of adults in the EU have been vaccinated. This is good," said Commission President

Around one million hospitalisations in the EU could be avoided if all those vaccinated for covid in the Union received a booster dose, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"Today we are reaching a milestone in vaccination campaigns. More than half of adults in the EU have taken the booster dose for covid. 82% of adults in the EU have been vaccinated. This is good. But of course we need to do more. Those who can should be vaccinated and take the booster dose," she said in a video message on Twitter.

Von der Leyen noted that "the doctors and the evidence have made it very clear. Vaccinations and booster doses provide the best protection against the virus and its mutations, including Omicron."

Half of all adults in the EU now had their booster shot.

This is good. But we need to do more.

She added that "data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that booster doses can keep us out of hospitals. If everyone vaccinated in the EU had a booster dose, we could avoid about a million hospitalisations in the EU."

"The pandemic is not over and the Omicron mutation is spreading really fast in many EU countries. Let's protect ourselves," concluded Ursula von der Leyen.
