The Deputy Director of the Geological Survey Department recommends vigilance and calmness "We are investigating whether it is a aftershock or a new earthquake" No reports of damage from the earthquake, according to the Prefect of Paphos

The seismic tremor just before 06:00 in the morning confirmed the Deputy Director of the Department of Geological Survey Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiou, adding that it is being examined whether it is a new earthquake or an aftershock of the earthquake of January 11, 2022, while recommending vigilance and calm.

In his statements to CNA, Mr. Hadjigeorgiou said "we confirm that at 5:58 today, there was an earthquake, in approximately the same area where the January 11 earthquake occurred , northwest of Pegeia and west of Polis Chrysochous."

The processing that is being done,he continued, is, "to see the exact size of the earthquake and the depth" but at the same time, he continued, "we are examining whether it is a aftershock or whether it is a new earthquake". Mr. Hadjigeorgiou noted that the earthquake was felt however, he said, they have no particular reports.

I consider stressed, that it was locally felt, taking into account the depth estimate which is around 10 km. These are, he explained, initial values, and once the data are well processed, a relevant announcement will be issued for accurate data.

Chatzigeorgiou said that we are in an earthquake-prone area, earthquakes can occur at any time, we cannot predict where they will occur, but he estimated that we should be vigilant and act calmly.

Asked about this, he said that having regular earthquake tremors that are not destructive earthquakes means that it is an indication that energy is being released without giving us big earthquakes, big destructive earthquakes and that is positive.

But this, he said, "does not mean that it is not excluded that in one of the active faults in Cyprus there is a big destructive earthquake."

That's why I say that we have to be vigilant, he concluded.

No reports of damage from the earthquake, according to Paphos Prefect

No reports of damage have been made so far from the earthquake tremor felt in Paphos, according to Paphos Prefect Mary Lambrou. In a statement to CNA, the Pafos Prefect said she was informed by a representative of the Civil Defence around 07:00 in the morning about the new earthquake.

It seems, she told CNA, that the epicentre is in the sea area of Pafos District , while so far there is no record of any damage.

She added that in case of a report of damage, as is customary, crews of the Paphos District Administration go to record the damage.

The District Administration said Lamprou always has crews on standby for these emergencies if something is needed, either for assessments or for immediate action.
