The Japanese weather satellite Himawari-8 has captured a shocking snapshot from space of the moment of the underwater eruption that occurred on Saturday at the volcano on Tonga Island in the Pacific Ocean.
The intense activity of the volcano even triggered tidal waves (tsunami) half a metre high, which overwhelmed the surrounding coastal areas of the island complex of American Samoa.
Earlier, amateur cameras had captured incredible footage of tsunamis "pounding" the adjacent coastline.
In the footage, people can be seen running in panic as the rushing waves crash ashore, sweeping everything in their path.
