[B-2]Members of the House of Representatives yesterday Tuesday voted in favor of prosecuting Mark Meadows, the former secretary general (chief of staff) of the presidency during Republican Donald Trump's days in office, after he refused to testify in the investigation into the bloody attack on Washington's Capitol building on January 6.[B-3]
[B-4]After this vote, the case of Mr. Meadows, one of the former president's closest associates, will be referred to federal prosecutors, who will be asked to decide whether or not to bring criminal charges against him for attempting to obstruct a congressional investigation.[B-5][B-6]In this case, the special investigative committee's investigation trying to shed light on the events of January 6, 2021, when thousands of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to prevent Joe Biden's victory in the November 2020 presidential election from being certified.[B-7][B-8]Mark Meadows, 62, then chief of staff to the tempestuous tycoon, is at the heart of the investigation into the events. But he refuses to testify despite a subpoena served on him by the so-called Jan. 6 committee. For this reason, because he is attempting by his silence to obstruct the congressional investigation, the elected officials have decided to seek criminal charges against him.[B-9][B-10]The very discreet, by all accounts, Mr. Meadows runs the risk of being imprisoned for several months if convicted.[B-11][B-12]Mark Meadows' refusal to testify does not constitute a lack of cooperation on his part, countered his attorney, George Terwilliger, recalling that his client turned over thousands of official documents, emails and text messages to the committee. It is probably a way to comply with Donald Trump's desire to keep some information secret in the name of presidential privilege. Some of the text messages that Mr Meadows had received were read aloud by the parliamentarians conducting the investigation in meetings that were partially broadcast directly by US news television networks[B-13][B-14][B-14] They came from Republican politicians, personalities from the right-wing Fox News network, and even the president's son, Donald Trump Jr. They all called on him to pressure the billionaire to speak up, to convince his supporters, who were preparing to storm Congress, to back down. This shows, according to the special investigative committee, the central role of Mr Trump's former close associate in the events and the weight his testimony could carry. If he decided to express himself."[B-15][B-16]We are not happy to be here, Liz Cheney, one of two members of the committee who belong to the Republican Party but are highly critical of the former president, said yesterday. This is a serious case and this is a step we wouldn't go to if it wasn't necessary, she added.[B-17]
