The cancellation of her participation in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg was announced on Monday afternoon by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In a post on Twitter, Mrs. von der Leyen announced that her driver had tested positive for coronavirus.
"I will therefore unfortunately have to cancel my participation in the @Europarl_EN plenary session," the Commission President said, adding that she was therefore returning to Brussels.
Ms von der Leyen was due to speak at the commemoration of the late President of the European Parliament later this afternoon.
