UNSC meeting on Pyongyang's recent missile test postponed

The United Nations Security Council has postponed by one day its meeting devoted to the recent missile tests by North Korea, in particular an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Diplomatic sources said yesterday (Wednesday) that the meeting would be held tomorrow (Friday) rather than today (Thursday) behind closed doors. It was convened at the request of the U.S.

On Sunday, North Korea conducted its first test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile since 2017. In theory, missiles of the type, which are capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional charges, could strike the US island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

North Korean state media reported that the accuracy and effectiveness of this particular weapon system was successfully tested. This was the seventh missile test Pyongyang has conducted in January, since the 5th. It had not conducted so many launches in a month since 2019, when Kim Jong Un's summit with then U.S. President Donald Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam, ended in failure.
