University of Cyprus condemns Russian invasion and supports the Ukrainian people
The Senate of the University of Cyprus, in a statement, expresses its disgust at the Russian invasion of Ukraine, expresses its solidarity with the Russian citizens who oppose it, and stands with the suffering Ukrainian people.
It notes that an independent democratic country in Europe is being destroyed, plunging Europe, and the world in general, into uncertainty and fear. It must not be tolerated.
As an intellectual foundation, it says, "we defend the European values of peace, dialogue and mutual respect, so painstakingly established on our continent after two world wars, and we must not allow the imposition of power by force."
As an academic institution of a country, notes the University of Cyprus, which is a victim of invasion and occupation, we feel more strongly the need to protest the aggression of one state against another.
"We must not leave room for barbarism to prevail. A Europe of peace, reason, and dialogue remains our ideal, and we call on all democrats to defend it. We stand with Ukraine."
