The German government hopes that it will become clearer what Putin plans to achieve with the concentration of forces on the Ukrainian border
Germany does not expect tangible results from Chancellor Olaf Scholz's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, but he hopes it will help to better understand what he hopes to achieve by strengthening military forces on Ukraine's border, a German government source said today.
Scholz is expected to travel to Moscow on Tuesday to meet with Putin as part of diplomatic contacts aimed at preventing a new Russian attack on Ukraine.
The source said Solts will make clear to the Russian leader that Western partners remain united in their stance that any attack would lead to "painful, significant sanctions" against Russia.
"He will also underline that we are not just ready for dialogue, but we insist on de-escalation and withdrawal of military forces, which can only be interpreted as a threat," the source said.
