"Cyprus has a lot to suffer from a possible Ukrainian crisis," Nouris said

Ukrainian companies intend to move their headquarters to Cyprus, said Interior Minister Nikos Nouris, noting that there is consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the issuance of relevant permits.

The statements were made on the sidelines of a meeting Nouris had on Wednesday with Democratic Party President Nicolas Papadopoulos and a delegation from the party on the migration issue. The meeting took place at the Interior Ministry.

Asked whether he was concerned about developments in Ukraine and whether these are likely to reduce interest in Cyprus, the Minister of Interior replied that "Cyprus has a lot of problems to suffer from a possible Ukrainian crisis."

In addition, he said that some companies based in Ukraine have expressed to the Ministry of Interior their intention to transfer their activities to the Republic of Cyprus. "We are ready to welcome any people who might want to move," he said.

Nouris said that "Ukraine is a country with which we have had, among other things, a strong engagement in tourism," adding that if the EU proceeds with sanctions against Russia, Cyprus should also be a participant in this process, with all that this implies. He expressed hope that the "undesirable scenario of conflict" would be avoided.

Asked if there are any preparations for receiving refugees from Ukraine, Nouris said there is cooperation and understanding with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides. "Especially for those who will move with the intention to stay for work, separate permits will be issued by the MFA in Kiev and then the MFA has arranged for the relevant permits to be issued upon arrival at Larnaca airport, always assuming that they are eligible," the MFA concluded.
