Ukrainian and Belarusian defence ministers contact to reduce tensions Belarus is conducting joint military exercises with Russia - which has dismissed as hysteria US warnings that it may be preparing to invade Ukraine - while Ukraine is conducting its own military exercises.

The defense ministers of Belarus and Ukraine had a telephone conversation today aimed at restoring an atmosphere of dialogue between the two countries and ensuring security in the region, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said.

Belarus is conducting joint military drills with Russia - which has dismissed as hysteria US warnings that it may be preparing to invade Ukraine - while Ukraine conducts its own military drills. Belarus said the ministers discussed the ongoing drills, expressing confidence that neither side poses a threat to the security of the other with its activities.

Ukraine confirmed that the phone call took place and called it a positive sign and a first step toward cooperation.
