Military clashes continue in Ukraine, between the country's army and the invading Russian forces

Clashes continue in Ukraine, between the country's army and the invading Russian forces. As you can see in the main photo of the article, on the map published by the New York Times, the Russians have managed to take control in a number of areas and their main forces are very close to Kiev, where the siege continues.

In addition to Crimea and the Ukrainian regions to the east (Donetsk, Lugansk), Russian forces are shown to have advanced north of the Kiev, Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions.

Russian forces have now entered the western suburbs of the Ukrainian capital, but are reportedly having difficulty crossing to the east side.

For their part, Ukrainian forces have reportedly prevented Russian troops from taking the town of Chernihiv in the northeast of the Ukrainian capital.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russian soldiers have entered a northern district of Kiev, assisted by saboteur groups operating in the city. Intelligence reports from the Pentagon and the UK Ministry of Defence said that Russia was aiming to surround the Ukrainian capital.

According to maps published by the Times, there are five points in the greater Kiev area where fighting and exchanges of fire have taken place (Gostomel, Obolon, Minsk Masif, Darnitsky, Kiev thermal power station), and two bridges have been destroyed or (significantly damaged according to other sources), one to the west of the city centre and one to the north.

The New York Times also shows the areas of fighting around the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear facility north of Kiev.

In the Donbass region (where Donetsk and Lugansk are located) in the east, Ukrainian forces appear to have managed to repel Russian forces for now, on the line of contact.

Near Crimea in the south, Russian forces are said to have managed to take the town of Kherson, but Ukrainian forces were attempting to retake it.

According to Ukrainian sources, the Kiev forces have managed to recapture this area.

Finally, the Russian side has today announced the capture of Melitopol in southern Ukraine, near Mariupol, which is denied by the British Ministry of Defence.
