The Prime Minister will outline our country's next steps in geopolitical and energy matters

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to deliver a speech with clear positions on Greece's role in this completely new environment that is taking shape in Europe and the world, informing the body on how our country will proceed after the world-historical events of the last few days.

According to his associates, the Prime Minister will essentially outline the compass for our country's next steps in geopolitical and energy terms, since a new world has now been shaped. Mitsotakis is not seeking to enter into a political confrontation with the opposition parties, but is expected to outline the clear choices that our country is making on all fronts, since, as a government source put it, now is not the time for moderate statements, let alone half-words. In any case, as the Prime Minister tells his interlocutors, the country has long since made its geopolitical choices. This explains the fact that our country has taken the lead in European processes on the tough sanctions against Russia and Vladimir Putin's associates, and that for the first time in decades it has broken the taboo of sending defence material to a war zone. Yesterday, moreover, two more C-130s with humanitarian and defence material left for Ukraine.

On the geopolitical front, Mitsotakis will stress that the unacceptable Russian invasion of an independent state can in no way be justified, nor can the response be conventional. The Prime Minister believes that his timely statement, together with President Macron, on the need for Europe to formulate a common defence doctrine and a common security policy in practice, not in words, is justified. At the same time, he was quick yesterday to take an active stand on Ukraine's side on the request for immediate tension in the EU put forward by Ukrainian President Zelensky. In other words, Mitsotakis will underline that our country is an active part of European diplomatic and defence policy, while he himself these days is on an open line with the heads of European institutions and other leaders on a daily basis.

Energy autonomy

At the same time, Mitsotakis will also refer to energy issues, declaring the need for Greece and Europe in general to become independent from Russian gas, which creates hostage-taking conditions. And this has to do not only with the need for immediate interventions to deal with the increased energy costs, but also with the need for energy autonomy of our country, in this respect. And this, as government sources say, passes through the cooperation schemes that our country is discussing, but also through the faster promotion of Renewable Energy Sources.
