EU ready to sanction Russia for actions against Ukraine if the time comes, says Borel

Assurances that the European Union "will continue to support Ukraine even at the most critical moment, if it comes," EU Foreign Ministers will give their Ukrainian counterparts, EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borel told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba at a meeting on Sunday evening.

Speaking on his arrival at the Foreign Ministers' meeting, Mr. Borel said he had a long discussion with Mr. Kuleba in relation to the situation on the ground, and that the Ukrainian minister would discuss with his counterparts how to continue structuring EU support to the country, adding that ministers would give assurances that they would continue to support Ukraine in the most critical moments if necessary.

Asked whether an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council could be convened , Mr. Borel stressed that all diplomatic tools should be used, including possible meetings at ministerial or leader level.

On sanctions, he stressed that "the work has been done" and that "we are ready", as he said.

"I will convene an extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council and present the sanctions at the right time," Borel added, recalling that it is up to the Council to take the decision on the basis of its recommendations.

"We are ready to do it when that time comes and I hope, and we are working, so that that time does not come," he added.

In his remarks, Mr. Borel also referred to the other major topic of the meeting, the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stressing that "nationalist and separatist rhetoric is increasing" in the country and "endangers the stability and integrity of the country."

Foreign ministers should decide how to end these dynamics in the country and avoid its dismemberment, he added. "This is a critical situation and ministers should take concrete decisions."
