Prison sentences 8 and 7 years were imposed today by the Limassol Permanent Criminal Court on two persons for a case of 800 grams of cocaine which were found on 16 May 2020 in a taxi and a house in Limassol.
The court sentenced the 56-year-old taxi driver to 8 years in prison, while the 20-year-old foreigner, who was in the vehicle with him and was carrying the drugs, to 7 years.
The background of the case
The YKAN operation was conducted on 16 May 2020 and during the operation four persons were arrested, two men aged 56 and 20, a woman aged 40, and a 69-year-old woman, who was subsequently released as there was no satisfactory evidence against her for criminal prosecution.
The 56-year-old taxi driver and the 20-year-old foreigner were stopped by members of the YKAN shortly before the 40-year-old woman's home and in their possession were found a quantity of cocaine, precision scales and the sum of 10,330 euros.
The 40-year-old woman was also handcuffed after a search of her home as an additional quantity of drugs was also found there.
Subsequently, a 45-year-old who was the "owner" of the drugs was also arrested. The 45-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to charges of possession, possession with intent to supply, use, money laundering, and the offence of evading lawful arrest. Following his admission, the Court last December imposed 10 years imprisonment
In the same case, a 40-year-old woman from Russia who played the role of a "storekeeper" of drugs was also convicted
