The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 24, 2021:
- 2 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 627.
- 168 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 62 are in serious condition. A proportion of 76.2% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 14 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an intensive care unit.
- A total of 112,532 tests for the detection of the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test have been performed.
- 917 (positivity rate: 0.81% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 149,580.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 2 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
A male, aged 91 years, who died on 23 December in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a terminal cause of COVID-19 is 627, of which:
- 400 males (63.8%), and
- 227 females (36.2%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 168 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 62 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 62 patients in serious condition, 22 are intubated, 6 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 34 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Γ. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 112,532 diagnoses performed, 10,963 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 101,569 by the antigen rapid test method, 917 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 58 cases from 6,661 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 223 cases out of 4,076 samples taken through private initiative.
- 14 cases out of 218 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 467 cases out of 72,156 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 155 cases out of 29,413 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
In addition, the following tests were performed without detecting a case:
- 0 cases from 8 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
