For US resident Alexander Spektor, the birth of his twin boys came with both fear and joy.

The two children were born prematurely to a surrogate mother in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev last week, with the delivery beginning hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion.

The hospital where they gave birth was attacked on Tuesday, with hospital staff posting photos of the damage to the building.

"Today they were transferred from a hospital where there was no shelter, no basement," the father told CNN on Tuesday. Every time the city's air raid sirens began to sound, hospital staff and patients had to "run across the street to a church where there was a basement," he added.

The babies have now been transferred to a safe and properly equipped hospital.

Spektor added that he was incredibly anxious just worried, tired, but also incredibly optimistic.

He is currently in the US state of Georgia, waiting for the opportunity to see his children.

"We hope every day that this moment will come soon," he said. He added that the babies and the surrogate mother were being transferred to a safer hospital and are expected to receive the supplies they need tomorrow.
