The most shocking and magnificent decision of their lives was taken a few hours ago, outside the Children's ICU of the hospital in Rio, by the parents of little Giorgakis, who since last Thursday was fighting a great battle to stay alive, when a bean he swallowed blocked his airway.
The child was taken in cardiac arrest to the Patras hospital, where he was left brain dead due to the cerebral oedema he suffered.
The parents, as reported in protothema.gr the director of the ICU pediatrician Andreas Eliades took the decision to donate the organs of their 2.5-year-old child, in order to save other children.
"A few hours ago the parents, who are quite young in age, took the big and brave decision and wish, as they say, to save other children from the organs of their young son, Giorgakis. This is the greatness of the soul and something very shocking, as it is not at all common for organs to be donated at this age. The order has already been given, but we don't know the details yet."
As the doctor says, Georgakis put up a great fight to keep himself alive: "Little Georgakis on Friday put up a great fight here in our hospital. He came from Agrinio hospital with cardiac arrest. He was successfully resuscitated by the doctors in Agrinio, but he developed cerebral edema resulting in brain death. There was a big fight to save him from the team. Brain death tests were done, the parents were informed and the big and shocking decision was made. Two amazing parents, once informed that nothing else could be done, decided after the diagnosis to donate their young son's organs. We are talking about two young people. They have two more children with George being their youngest child."
According to the Chronicle, the incident occurred last Thursday in the St. Constantine area. The little boy, according to reports, swallowed a bean, causing a very serious problem. It was deemed necessary to transfer him to the University Hospital of Patras and hospitalize him in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
