Three bills for the promotion of Renewable Energy Sources before the Parliament

Three bills related to the promotion of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the Cypriot market were presented at the meeting of the Commerce Committee of the Parliament on Tuesday.

These are the Law on Specifications, Sustainability Criteria and Reduction of Fuel Emissions, the Law on the Operation of the Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Saving Fund and the Law on the Promotion and Encouragement of the Use of Renewable Energy Sources Law.

In his statements after the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee and MP of DISY, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, stressed the importance of these bills for the promotion of RES in the country's energy mix.

As he said, "the rate of penetration of RES in our energy mix must be accelerated" and added that moves, such as tenders, which will slow down the process, should be avoided. "Doing so may slow down the opening of the market," he said, arguing that the aim is to open the market as soon as possible, for consumers to buy from the cheapest provider and for there to be a function of real competition.

He said that through these bills, fuel quality standards, the controls that need to be institutionalised and the rates will also be regulated. He explained that the bills were presented to the committee today, followed by presentations and then written submissions will be made before the debate on the articles begins.
