A call for applications for lifeguards was announced on Monday by the Limassol district administration, in an effort to fill the gaps observed during this summer period. The lifeguard towers are understaffed, a spokesman for Limassol's lifeguards told CNA.

In its announcement, the Limassol district administration invites those who meet the specified criteria for the position of "lifeguard" to submit the special form "Application for employment in the position of lifeguard" by July 20, along with all the required documents.

Among other things, applicants must hold a valid recognized diploma, equivalent to the 4th medal (silver) or professional beach lifeguard, of the Cyprus Lifeguard Federation.

However, due to understaffing, special approval has been secured from the Ministry of Interior, so that the 3rd, 2nd or 1st medal can be accepted , provided that the relevant list of successful candidates with a 4th medal has first been exhausted.

As Limassol lifeguards' representative Pambos Panagi told the Cyprus News Agency, so far 55 lifeguards are employed, while the number should reach 84. Also, he continued, of the total of 24 lifeguard towers, seven should operate on a shift system, which is only done at the lifeguard post at Olympion Beach and Kourion Beach.

Lifeguards, he noted, are calling for immediate recruitment, more posts during the winter season where there are winter swimmers, an increase in the number of 12-month lifeguards from 10 to 20, and the exclusion of people not serving on lifeguard posts from the unit's strength.

Panagi expressed the view that the shortage of lifeguards is directly related to the lack of the necessary motivation, resulting in several qualified persons not expressing interest.
