Statement by EPP President Marinos Sizopoulos on the vote against the Local Government Bill Explains the reasons for their decision
"We did not give a positive vote since Democracy, Transparency and Simple Proportionality were not guaranteed," Marinos Sizopoulos said in a statement, explaining the reasons why the EPP voted against the Local Government Bill.
Adding that, on the part of the EDEK, "without questioning the positive provisions in the bill that was passed today by a majority in Parliament, we proceeded to vote against it since the electoral system that has been adopted and the way the municipal districts operate indirectly introduces a form of majority system that will create serious problems in the proper representation and representation of citizens and parties in municipalities and communities."
"For this reason and in view of the fact that from the EPP side on matters of principle we would like democracy, transparency and simple proportional representation to be the basic elements of the reform, we could not give a positive vote. That is why we voted against," he says.
In conclusion, Marinos Sizopoulos says that "I would like to stress that the EPP had a firm and consistent position that school tax offices should not be included at this time in the municipal councils because it would create a serious problem with the burden of responsibilities. Thus the risk of downgrading the operation of the school tax offices with all that this implies is visible."
