The establishment of traditional political parties in Cyprus was the result of the intense national, political and social visions, aspirations and struggles of Cypriot citizens that marked the modern history of our country. The establishment of these parties arose from the need to shape the ideological expression of the political views of the citizens, they were a pillar of strengthening our Democracy, but also a vehicle for the implementation of political decisions, whenever they were in the governance of the country.

In the last decades we have had the establishment of communes of opportunity, products of vanity and extreme ambition of individuals who left their parties citing various reasons. Parties with no political background, no identity and no political compass, which the Cypriot voter relegated with his vote to the shelf of history.
In contrast, the D.SY. has always synchronized its political pacing with the needs of society, a genuine exponent of the European identity of the country, of economic development that will strengthen the welfare state, with the reforms and the continuous modernization of the structures of the state, with the reorganization and strengthening of the Defense against the Turkish threat, but most importantly, with a concern to launch all those conditions for the resolution of our national issue.
In this sincere national effort, after the disastrous AKEL government for the country, the D.SY. opened its doors wide, embraced all citizens and in good faith enabled technocrats who had no particular political or organisational affinity with the D.SY., to be part of this national effort by participating in the governance of the country. These persons were promoted to key positions, gaining reasonable political standing and recognition. They had long-standing political and parliamentary support from the party, they were given every guarantee, so that they could achieve their work and mission, implementing the programme of President Anastasiades. They had the political shield of the D.I.SY. against any nihilistic criticisms and petty party politics of the opposition.
Unfortunately, it appears that for some, the D.I.SY. has been nothing more than a vehicle for the promotion of their own opportunistic and selfish pursuits. Some are cutting and sewing their own suit for the position of PTA in order to fit in with AKEL's measures, while others are undermining the party that promoted them. The monumental report of George Katsifaras could be repeated here: "If it were not for Andreas Papandreou, not even the doorman of our apartment building would know us". Without their participation in the government of Nicos Anastasiades and the political support of D.SY., would these people have any political substance today? Clearly not!
Today the opposition is rejoicing, even though it is politically and organizationally at the nadir of its electoral power, since some of them have decided to throw water into AKEL's mill.SY. and Anastasiades from power.
President Averof Neophytou is ready to enter the battle of the presidential elections in political terms, with clear programmatic positions and arguments. A politician who has been tested many times in difficult situations. Unfortunately, however, he is called upon to contend with petty politics and political ingratitude.
These attitudes were never encouraged by the Cypriot voter, but on the contrary, he disapproved of them, because they are alien to his temperament. After all, political adventurism should be marginalized if we want our country to prosper. The political poverty of AKEL to express an autonomous political speech and programme for governing the country with its own candidate, ostensibly promoting the need for cooperation, as well as the vanity of some, cannot stand in the way of President Averof Neophytou's tried and trusted path to the presidential elections.
With political achievements, with self-confidence and a credible plan for the future, DISY with Averof Neophytou will win this battle. At the time of responsibility for the country, the people will not choose to turn back. As for some, beyond the judgment of the people, beyond the political support to have a serious and credible political party in the Parliament and the Government, unfortunately for them, for the Cypriot citizen there is also philotimo.
