The U.S. government views positively President Anastasiades' initiative on Confidence Building Measures.
Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides received this message during his contacts in Washington with US officials including his counterpart Anthony Blinken.
Speaking to State Radio. Kasoulides said that the government will insist on its proposal to open the illegal Tympos airport and Famagusta port in exchange for the concession of the closed town of Varosha, despite the rejection by the Turkish side.
This proposal, Mr. Kasoulides stressed, removes the other side's argument about the isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
At the same time, he noted, the Greek Cypriot side will do its utmost to resume negotiations, but will under no circumstances accept the Turkish side's conditions for sovereignty and two separate states.
He said that the Americans' assessment is that due to elections, it is difficult to resume negotiations this year.
