The Times of London reiterates in a new article its support for the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures in Athens. This time the article is published in response to the intention of a British institute to reproduce the sculptures to the nearest millimetre so that the British Museum can exhibit the replicas.
This is the proposal unveiled weeks ago by the Institute of Digital Archaeology outside Oxford, which uses a "robot with a human touch", as the paper comments, capable of creating very faithful copies of archaeological monuments, something it has already done with the ISIS-damaged Syrian Arch of Palmyra.
Speaking to the Times, the institute's director Roger Michael says that if the British Museum does not give permission for the Greek sculptures to be photographed with 3D cameras, "guerrilla tactics" could be used, meaning the sculptures could be recorded with 3D cameras potentially used by an "army of patriotic Greeks."
Michael explains that these 3D representations of monuments are loaded into the system of a robotic machine with the ability to reproduce them with millimetre precision by carving the stone. "It looks like something out of the first Terminator movie, but the subtlety of the sculpting is just stunning. It's as good as anything a human sculptor can do," says Mr Michael.
Today's Times article says the British Museum should "embrace" the technological opportunity offered.
"The marbles should be returned to Greece, where they can be displayed at the wonderful Acropolis Museum in Athens. The British Museum should agree to display the 3D replicas. In return, Greece could pledge not to allow any more copies to be made. That way the Greeks can reclaim their cultural heritage and the British Museum can maintain its status as the world's greatest historical collection," the Times article concludes.
