Djokovic appeals against deportation from Australia

Novak Djokovic, world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, has filed an appeal against the Australian authorities' decision to cancel his visa and expel him from the country.

Melbourne judge Anthony Kelly will later hear the appeal by the Serb, who has been detained by immigration officials in Melbourne since arriving in the country on Wednesday afternoon with the intention of playing in the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovicdid not provide sufficient evidence of the medical exemption he received, nor did he produce the visa he needed to enter Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today.

The Australians cancelled Novak Djokovic's visa and banned him from entering the country to play in the Australian Open tournament after he was forced to wait for several hours at Melbourne airport.

"All I can say is that the medical exemption evidence provided was found to be insufficient," Morrison said during a media briefing in Canberra, adding that no separate investigation was chosen for Djokovic regarding the cancellation of his visa.

Novak Djokovic was transferred from Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport to the Park Hotel, in the suburb of Carlton, pending a decision by a Melbourne judge and possibly his removal from Australia due to a visa problem.
