The US remains in regular contact with the Ukrainian President via a secure satellite phone
Before the war in Ukraine started, the US gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a secure satellite phone, CNN reported, citing a US source.
"The U.S. remains in regular contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky via a secure satellite phone given to the Ukrainian government last month before the Russian invasion began," according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter.
To secure the phone conversations between Ukrainian and American officials, they were conducted through the embassy in Kiev," two U.S. officials said. But as the US was preparing to evacuate the embassy, and as fears of a Russian invasion grew, the US sent the phone used by Zelensky now to their Ukrainian counterparts.
"The secure phone allows Zelensky to stay in touch with the US as long as he has the cell phone," the US official, who was not named, added. Zelensky has made it clear that he intends to remain in his country and is currently moving to several locations in Kiev that are protected by a significant security presence, CNN reported.
Previously, the Ukrainian president had videotaped himself speaking in front of monuments or other recognizable buildings, but yesterday's speech at the European Parliament was broadcast via video from an unrestricted room decorated only with a Ukrainian flag.
The US provided a similar satellite phone to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the US official claims. The "made in USA" satellite phones require electricity, but can be powered by a generator or car power if needed.
As CNN reports, it took a few days for the Ukrainians to get the satellite phones up and running as the instructions on how to use them were in English, not Ukrainian.
