The proposed law on the protection of victims of crime

The proposed law on the protection of victims of crime will be brought before the Plenary of the Parliament in early March, after the completion of the debate in the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights.

The proposal for the Adoption of Minimum Standards on Rights, Support and Protection of Victims of Crime was tabled by the President of the Committee and an AKEL MP, Er Charalambidou, who in statements to the Parliament on Monday said that its content "has been consulted and repeatedly discussed in the Committee, as well as consulted with all stakeholders".

"The comments made were adopted," he added, and said the bill would be taken to the House of Assembly on March 3 for a vote.

Among other things, the proposed law provides that in cases where there is a potential or established risk of harm to the victim of a criminal act, the police will inform the victim that they have the right to be informed of the date of imprisonment or of the escape of a person who has been remanded in custody, charged or convicted of a criminal act involving the victim, and will also be informed of measures decided to protect the victim.

for the investigation of complaints by the police, for the training of judges and adjudication of gender-based violence cases, and for the way such cases are covered by the media.

As Ms. Charalambidou said, this issue has been raised by all members of the parliamentary committee in light of the recent Supreme Court decision on the case of the young British woman who had reported rape by a group of young men.
