The problem that has arisen with the results of the fourth-year examinations will be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on Education next Monday. According to the Chairman of the Committee Chrysanthos Savvidis, the Ministries of Education and Health will be invited for consultation on the issue.

The meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, February 21, and will deal with the issue of the quarterly examinations and its results, as well as the situation in schools due to the pandemic.

The quarterly examinations were conducted this year for the first time in all classes of high schools and technical schools in the country. The low performance of students in the exams has provoked strong reactions from organised parents, who are concerned about the evaluation of students vying for places in higher and higher educational institutions this year.

In a statement after the meeting, the chairman of the Education Committee and DIKO MP, Chrysanthos Savvidis, explained that "having listened to the concerns of all stakeholders, parents, students and teachers, the Committee asked for information on how the institution of quarterly examinations has been adopted, what the results have been and whether the objectives have been achieved."

He added that it should also be examined whether there were errors and omissions and whether improvements could be made in the process of administering the examinations. "We will seek to provide a solution to the problem that students are facing at this particular moment," he said.

For his part, AKEL MP Christos Christofides spoke of a barrage of complaints from parents of students expressing their strong dissatisfaction with the results of term exams, saying it was not surprising "the victimisation of thousands of children" through the exams.

"We had warned, not only about the inappropriateness of the institution, but also about the fact that especially in these pandemic conditions, with the gaps that have been created, with the absences of children and teachers from schools, the Ministry's persistence and eccentricity, to conduct the exams, when everyone else, except the Minister and DISY, disagreed, would lead to this tragic result, "he said and spoke of serious implications for the future of children who with their diplomas claim a place in European universities.
