The Speaker of the Parliament sent a message of solidarity to the workers on the occasion of the Labour Day

The Speaker of the Parliament sent a message of solidarity to the workers, the unemployed, pensioners and all vulnerable social strata, sent the Speaker of the Parliament Anita Demetriou in a report before the plenary session's agenda.

In her report on Labour Day, Ms Demetriou declared the Parliament's determination to defend the ideals of Labour Day and safeguard workers' rights for a better future, acknowledging its duty to enact legislation to address any deregulation of labour relations and circumvention of workers' rights.

He added that despite the tragic outcome of the 1886 uprisings, May Day was a worldwide landmark date for the introduction of the eight-hour day, the increase in wages and the establishment of a social security system.

"In Cyprus, already in the 1920s, under the adverse conditions of colonialism, the labour movement began its own struggles for humane working conditions, social justice and dignity, laying the foundations for many of the social achievements whose benefits Cypriots enjoy today," he said.

"We commemorate this day and pay tribute to the workers who fought and paved the way for a democratic and sustainable labour law against the brutal exploitation of human labour," he said.
