There was also a large turnout today in the village of Trimiklini, where a walk-in vaccination centre for children and citizens operated today. As Director General of the Ministry of Health Christina Giannaki, who visited the centre, said in a statement, 30 children were vaccinated by 11.00. Yannaki also said that 70.4% of the general population had completed their vaccination schedule.

The vaccination center was open from 8 am to 2 pm.00 at the offices of the Commissioner of Mountainous Areas, Kostas Hambiaouris, with the participation of volunteer paediatricians of the Cyprus Paediatric Society.

According to the Director General of the Ministry of Health, by 11 am 80 vaccines were administered, 30 to children aged 5-11 years, 50 to children aged 12 years and above. "Most important of all is the fact that we reached in our general population 70.4% fully vaccinated, one of the best rates in Europe. We also have for the adult population around 83.7%," she said.

According to Ms Giannakis, the percentage of children who have been vaccinated across the country is 6.7%. However, there is an increasing trend. "Parents trust pediatricians, we have an increasing trend every day we have more and more children coming to this vaccination program other have done the second dose. We will continue the walk-ins which are in the best interest of public health and we will continue this fight to the end. With the aim of reaching 75% if we succeed," he said.

The President of the Cyprus Paediatric Society Michael Anastasiades spoke of effective cooperation between the Paediatric Society and the Ministry of Health. "We are once again receiving this optimistic message from the children themselves and the parents of course, who, responding to the call of the state and the scientific community, accept vaccination as one of the most important weapons we have at our disposal at the moment to deal with this plague that has been plaguing us for the past two years," he said. He said the Paediatric Society, through its members, will continue the vaccinations "until all the children of Cyprus are vaccinated."

For his part, Commissioner for Mountains Costas Hambiaouris welcomed the opportunity given to residents of mountainous areas to be vaccinated. "We support the whole effort, the vaccination programme is proceeding normally to give the opportunity, to facilitate the last resident of the mountain communities to be vaccinated," he said.
