Commitment to joint action for a solution on the basis of the TIO, expressed by PEO and T/C unions What the new General Secretary of the guild, Sotiroula Charalambous, said

The commitment to joint action for the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the TCE was reaffirmed today by PEO and T/C trade unions, the new General Secretary of the guild, Sotiroula Charalambous, told CBC.

A delegation of the PEO headed by Ms. Charalambous had a series of contacts with the guilds of workers in cooperative institutions, teachers and professors, "local government" workers, Dev İş, KTAMS and academics at the Eastern Mediterranean "university", all PSO members.

The meetings with the TC progressive organisations, he said, were held on the occasion of the New Year and the election of the new leadership of the PSO.

Returning from her contacts in the afternoon, the new SG said they expressed solidarity with the struggle of the T/C trade unions against austerity, poverty, precision and for the preservation of the identity of the T/C community.

With Dev İş, Charalambous noted that the two organisations have a solid cooperation and a programme of joint actions. She said that they will continue their actions to support TCs looking for work in Cyprus within the framework of cooperation between the two guilds.

Asked about the picture in the occupied territories from the briefing they had today, Charalambous said that it is very difficult. Strike actions are taking place, she said, "in local government," adding that work stoppages are being launched in the coming days. "On the one hand, there is the value of the TL which annihilates the incomes of the TCs. At the same time, for these organizations there is also the attempt to assimilate the T/C community in Turkey, which these progressive organizations are resisting."

They consider, he continued, that this is a regression and a negative development.

There is also, Charalambous said, a concern about how things are progressing on the Cyprus problem because it is a common understanding that without a solution to the Cyprus problem, the problems of workers in Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, cannot be effectively addressed.

In the New Year, Charalambous said, the annual meeting of the PEO and Dev İş bodies will take place, which takes place every year, saying that the two guilds will build new ones depending on the conditions and needs, in addition to the stable actions.
