Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic surpassed the tragic milestone of 16,000 dead yesterday (Tuesday). The health ministry said 30 patients had succumbed to complications of COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 16,024. The cumulative total of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 has now reached 638,043. Sri Lanka has been faced with a new wave of the pandemic, attributed to the more contagious Omicron variant. Cases are currently topping a thousand a day.
South Korea
In South Korea, infections with the new coronavirus have today, for the first time since the pandemic broke out two years ago, exceeded the 170,000 mark, almost doubling in a week, as the rapid spread of the more contagious Omicron variant continues. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KCDA) said that in the 24 hours to midnight yesterday (Tuesday), 171,452 cases of SARS-CoV-2, an unprecedented number, were confirmed and 99 patients succumbed due to complications of COVID-19, the fourth heaviest daily toll to date. The provisional casualty count of the new coronavirus pandemic in South Korea thus reached 7,607 deaths out of a total of 2,329,182 infections, according to the KCDA. The mortality rate dropped to 0.33%. The number of patients hospitalized in serious to critical condition increased to 512 (+32 in 24 hours). It has been on the rise for days, from 200 last week to 400 plus on Saturday and now above the 500 mark. Experts and authorities warn that cases may even reach 270,000 in early March and that critically ill patients in hospitals may exceed the 1,000 mark. 86.4 percent of South Korea's approximately 52 million citizens have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 so far, while 59.9 percent have received a booster dose, according to KCDA figures.
Malaysia
The Malaysian Ministry of Health announced today that in the 24 hours to midnight yesterday, Tuesday, 43 patients succumbed to complications of COVID-19 and 27,179 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed. The death toll in the pandemic of the new coronavirus in the country of 33 million people has reached 32,433 deaths out of a total of 3,273,958 infections. Active cases increased to 267,084. There are 286 patients with COVID-19 in intensive care units (ICUs), 180 intubated. 79.8% of the population has been fully immunised against COVID-19, while 43.4% have received a booster dose of vaccine.

In Germany 209 were confirmed.052 cases of SARS-CoV-2 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 13,971,947, figures released today by the Robert Koch Institute, the country's epidemiological surveillance body, show. The deaths of 299 patients due to complications of COVID-19 raised the death toll of the new coronavirus pandemic in the country to 121,902, according to the same source.
Vietnam
Vietnam's Ministry of Health announced yesterday Tuesday that 55,879 SARS-CoV-2 infections - a record - were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, with the total number of cases reaching 2,890,252. Brazil
Brazil today announced 105,776 new cases of coronavirus, while 816 patients died due to complications of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to health ministry figures. The Latin American country now has 28,351,327 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, while the death toll from Covid-19 has risen to 645,420, according to the same source.
