The Mayor of Athienou requested the assistance of the Chief of Police and the Director of the Larnaca Police Department

, with the aim of identifying and punishing unknown persons who have recently stolen and destroyed assets of the Municipality.

In an announcement by the Municipality it is stated that "in recent times there have been provocative actions of theft and destruction of municipal assets of the Municipality of Athienou, actions that are unfortunately not recorded for the first time in the Municipality, but which have recently been very increased."

Specifically, in a short period of time "about 50 trees have been uprooted and stolen in the surrounding area of the excursion area of the church of Archangel Michael. Unknown persons, so far, have dug up, uprooted and stolen all the large trees with a height of about two meters, which were planted two years ago, with the construction of the excursion area, which were watered with automatic mechanisms and hoses."

Also "an iron stake has been cut off and a photovoltaic-type light fixture has been stolen, which had been installed at the expense of the Municipality at the end of the Kafounda road, at the junction with the old Athienou Avdellerou Larnaca road. The lamp was placed in order to facilitate the use of the road at night by passers-by."

According to the statement, "unknown persons have also broken into the facilities located at the Constantine Municipal Park and stole 4 peacocks owned by the Municipality, worth 8 to 10 thousand euros. This action is reprehensible in all respects and is pure theft of municipal property which is a very serious offence."

Also "unknown persons have made significant damage to the Konstantinio Municipal Park, in projects recently completed after European co-financing. The projects were paid for by the Municipality of Athienou, the payment of the European grant is still pending and they suffered damages of hundreds of euros, which the Municipality of Athienou had to pay."

It is noted that "the Municipality has informed and denounced to the Police the thefts and destructions by unknown persons and has requested investigation, identification and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators. Today, Monday, February 28, the Mayor of Athienou Kyriakos Kareklas contacted by telephone the Chief of Police and the Police Director of Larnaca and requested their assistance for a thorough investigation of the incidents and identification of the culprits."

In its announcement, the Municipality of Athienou "appeals once again to all its citizens to become agents of protection of municipal property. They are requested to provide the Municipality with any information that will lead to the arrest of thieves and/or offenders both in the specific cases or others that come to their attention in the future."

The Municipality "assures that all confidentiality will be respected in order to protect the informants. The telephone numbers of Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas (99667907) and the Mayor of the Municipality, Janos Germanos (99474188) are available to all" while citizens are invited "to help the Municipality so that it can implement projects for their satisfaction and well-being."
