-10 mercury but no record threatened last night Perhaps even lower temperatures since Sunday What the Director of the Meteorological Service Kleanthis Nicolaides tells the Cyprus Times

Record low temperatures in areas across Cyprus and heavy snowfall make up the weather picture.

During the overnight, which for now was the coldest recorded this winter, the mercury dropped to minus 10, (-9.7) in Troodos Square.

At the same time in Prodromos, minus 9 (-8.9) was recorded.

Speaking to the Cyprus Times, Director of the Meteorological Service Kleanthis Nicolaides said that record low temperatures were not threatened, at least for now.

In Troodos Square, the lowest temperature recorded for January was minus 12 (12.3) in 2016, while in Prodromos in distant 1964 the mercury read minus 11.

As for what to expect in the coming days, Nicolaides told us that the cold air mass, which is affecting the region, is receding from tomorrow, while low pressure is expected gradually from Saturday. A cold air mass will affect the region again from Sunday onwards.

From Sunday evening until the middle of next week we will see temperatures dropping low again, approaching present levels.

Asked about this, the Director of the Met Office said cautiously that it is possible that it could be even lower threatening negative records.
