The Legal Affairs Committee started a cycle of visits to police headquarters in Limassol The problems are on the table The old premises of the Limassol police station are old and without a lift The data presented by the Limassol Police Department
Problems and recommendations were heard today by the President and members of the Parliamentary Committee of Legal Affairs, Justice and Public Order, from members of the Police, as part of a cycle of visits to police headquarters, initiated by the Limassol Police Department.
The purpose and aim of the visit and of the Committee, said its Chairman, Nikos Tornaritis, "was to ascertain the problems, concerns, thoughts, suggestions and worries of the participants in the discussion that took place, as well as of the employees, in these old premises of the Limassol Police Department, which were built in 1957".
Referring specifically to the problem faced by the Limassol Police Directorate with the building where it is housed, Tornaritis said that "obviously, if there is no plan for relocation, immediate maintenance of all the buildings is required."
"What we have identified and I think is unacceptable, is the fact that there is no elevator in a place where about 300 people work and which is also visited by the public," he added and called "in the most formal way, all relevant bodies, ministries and others, to act immediately to install an elevator."
Also, he continued, there should be "a correction of the situation with the police station in Lania, which operates in a container".
On the issue of staff shortage, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs said that "it is an issue that we are trying to manage, within the limits of our powers" and indicated that there is a need to strengthen the Police Force with staff, since its responsibilities have been expanded.
Asked about the issue of promotions and the way of evaluation, Mr.Tornaritis said that "I cannot conceive that one master's degree, the recognized and equal one, is worthy and the other is placed on the sidelines."
"All postgraduate degrees are postgraduate degrees," he said, and expressed his intention to ask the relevant ministry to send new, revised regulations "that fully cover the specific spectrum that is directly related to the evaluation of police officers and promotions." He continued, "everything must be and appear clear and we must not have, either challenges or appeals to the administrative courts."
Asked to comment also on the issue of the control arches at the Limassol courthouse, which remain in disuse because they do not fit in the places where they should be placed, he said that all public buildings must have some kind of security and "from there on, those responsible who are mandated to manage that security must carry it out."
In conclusion, the Chairman of the House Committee on Legal Affairs stated that "the police officer must be respected, but to be respected he must carry out his mission and his mission is one, service to the citizen, security in the state and through this security we deepen democracy and defend the public interest and justice."
However, according to data presented by the Limassol CID and despite the lack of staff, there is an increase in the detection of serious criminal cases for 2021, with the percentage reaching 100% for murders (5), attempted murders (4) and rapes (9).
In addition, last year, 27 out of 44 cases of robbery and extortion have been solved (61.4%) and 117 burglaries out of a total of 206 complaints (56.8%), while 87 out of 193 thefts have been solved (45.1%).
Arson and attempted arson recorded a detection rate of 24.6%, while none of the 8 cases of destruction of property with explosives reported in 2021 have been solved. The detection rate of other serious criminal cases is 79.7%.
In 2021, the Limassol district recorded the lowest number of deaths in traffic collisions in the last six years. Specifically, nine deaths were recorded last year, compared to 17 in 2020, 14 in 2019, 17 in 2018, 18 in 2017 and 11 deaths in 2016.
