The major Lemesos city centre flood protection project starts after the Christmas holidays The contract is worth €6,950,000
The contract for the construction of the major flood protection project of Lemesos city centre, which aims to protect the areas of the Medieval Castle and the commercial street of Independence, was signed on Tuesday.
The contract was signed on behalf of SALA by the President of Lemesos Mayor Nikos Nicolaides and on behalf of the Contractor by the Senior Executive Director of ATLAS PANTOU Mr Marios Pontikis.
As stressed by the President of SALA Limassol Mayor Nikos Nicolaides, this project comes in continuation of the flood protection works for the Greater Limassol area concerning the northernmost areas, the construction of which started last May. He indicated that with these two projects, 2021 can be considered the year of major flood protection projects for Limassol.
The value of the contract is €6,950,000. Construction work will begin immediately after the Christmas and New Year holidays and is scheduled to last 20 months.
The event was attended by council members and executives, government officials, representatives of our city's agencies and authorities, and media representatives.
The purpose of this project is to protect the Medieval Castle area and the city's most important commercial street, Independence Street, from flooding.
The project envisages the construction of a stormwater network consisting of three main culverts with a total length of about four kilometres, which will collect rainwater at three horizontal levels and channel it westwards to the bed of the Garilly River, thus preventing it from flowing down towards the historic city centre. This is a project with a very high degree of difficulty, as it involves extensive excavation of 27 roads in the centre of Limassol, many of which are main commercial roads with increased traffic and commercial activity.

The completion of this project will close the large gap of inadequate flood protection, which has plagued residents and businesses in the city centre for many years. The project is co-funded with a government contribution.
