The installation of the smart pylons in the city of Paphos started on Saturday with the installation of the first of the 56 pylons.
The Mayor of Pafos, Faidonas Faidonos, in a post on Social Media said that "the first of the 56 smart pillars has been installed today in our city", noting that the project will contribute to the radical upgrade of the city's lighting and will change the night-time image of Pafos.
He also says that Pafos Municipality will save half a million euros annually by replacing conventional street lighting lamps with LED lamps, and says that the Municipality is installing smart lighting at the municipal boundaries and 56 smart pillars at central points of the city.
"We are entering the smart technological era at a rapid pace. Such as with display for updates, ads etc, wifi, cameras, environmental sensors, smart lighting, electric car charging and more," he adds. In this regard, he continues, the relevant contracts have been signed between Pafos Municipality and AHK at the Pafos Municipal Hall, with Faidonos noting that the investment exceeds 3 million euros.
In the next period and within a year, seven thousand luminaires will be replaced in the municipal boundaries of Paphos with low consumption luminaires which will be managed by special software, based on which the intensity of the light will vary depending on the time.
With smart management and LED luminaires, the local authority will save close to half a million per year, Mr. Faidonos noted. The contract, the Paphos Mayor continued, has also included the installation of 56 smart pillars on which cameras will be installed, screens on which announcements will be made about environmental data of the city, available parking spaces and anything else.
Paphos is practically moving into the era of digitalisation and the smart city, noting that in order to be officially certified as a smart city it will have to execute 28 projects, Faidonas Faidonos said.
Already, he said, six of them have been executed and another 22 remain to be completed in the next two years. The contract was signed by the Paphos Mayor and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the AHK, Michael Komodromos. Mr. Komodromos noted that for the first time a municipality in Cyprus is attempting to install smart city infrastructure, stressing that it is a challenge for AHK.
