The importance of the bilateral defence cooperation programme between Cyprus and Jordan, which is part of the network of international partnerships that the National Guard (NF) has developed with the Armed Forces of friendly and allied countries, was reaffirmed during the official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan by the Chief of the AF, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis from 3 to 5 January 2022, at the invitation of the Chief of the Armed Forces (AF) of Jordan, Major General Yousef Huneiti.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, developments in the Middle East and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region were also discussed, as well as various aspects of defence cooperation between the two countries' armed forces at bilateral, trilateral and multilateral levels.
During the visit, the Chief of the AF, who headed a delegation of officers of the General Staff of the National Guard, was also received by the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, at the Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman, whom he briefed on the excellent impressions and outstanding results of his visit to Jordan, while ways to further strengthen the military and defense cooperation that has been developed in recent years between the two countries' armed forces, as well as international efforts to comprehensively combat terrorism were discussed.
In particular, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Defense, on January 4, 2022, the Chief of the National Defence Forces was officially received by his counterpart at the General Headquarters of the General Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces, where a private meeting between the two Chiefs was held and then the Cypriot delegation was briefed on the Jordanian Armed Forces.
During the meeting of the two Chiefs, which took place in an excellent atmosphere, the traditional principled positions were initially formulated and then views were exchanged on international security challenges, as well as the security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Lieutenant General Zervakis referred to the challenges facing Cyprus in the field of defence and security, while the common intention to deepen both the bilateral military cooperation programme and the corresponding trilateral programme with Greece was confirmed in order to promote the excellent relations between the National Defence Forces and the Jordanian Armed Forces, contributing to the joint efforts of Cyprus, Jordan and other friendly countries to ensure peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Subsequently, according to the MoD, Lieutenant General Zervakis, together with his counterpart, visited the Special Operations Training Center "King Abdullah II" (KASOTS) where they were welcomed by its Commander Brigadier General Raed Dora, they first attended a static exhibition and demonstration of weapon systems and equipment manufactured by the Jordanian defence industry, followed by a Residential Exercise at the Centre's specially designed Exercise Field.
Subsequently, he was briefed on the activities and capabilities of the Centre as well as a tour of its facilities and infrastructure, while the Director General of the Jordanian Defence Industry Design and Development Centre gave a similar briefing.
On the same day, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Defence, the Cypriot delegation visited the Jordanian Defence Forces Martyrs' Memorial, where the Chief of Defence paid tribute to those who died in the various wars from 1915 until today, he was given an interactive briefing at the adjacent Military Museum where important military relics related to the history of the Jordanian Armed Forces from the founding of the country until today are on display.
Finally, as part of the visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Chief of the AF also met with Cypriot Ambassador Michael Ioannou, who participated in all official contacts and visits with whom a review of Cyprus-Jordan bilateral relations was conducted, as well as Archbishop Christoforos of Jordan (Kyriakupolis).
