Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced the successful completion of Operation "Nostos 3" for the evacuation and safe transfer of Greek expatriates from the Mariupol region of Ukraine.
In a post on Twitter, Mr. Dendias informed that the convoy of the operation, coordinated by Ambassador Francis Kostellenou, managed to cross the Ukrainian-Moldovan border.
"The convoy under the coordination of Ambassador Francis Kostellenou has crossed the Ukrainian-Moldovan border where a staff of our Embassy in Bucharest was waiting for them," Dendias' post reads.
"Operation Nostos 3 has been successfully completed. Congratulations to all those who contributed to the happy outcome," he concluded.
In a statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry noted that the operation was conducted "under extremely difficult conditions," with the convoy starting from Mariupol three days ago and successfully crossing the Ukrainian-Moldovan border today.
The convoy initially consisted of 21 cars and 82 people, while other cars were subsequently added, the Greek Foreign Ministry said.
On the Moldovan side of the border, a team from the Embassy in Bucharest, headed by Ambassador Sophia Grammata, will welcome the Greek expatriates.
"Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, on behalf of the Government, expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to the successful outcome of the operation both on the ground and in Athens, under the coordination of Secretary General Themistocles Demiris," the Foreign Ministry's statement said.
As noted, Consul Generals Manolis Androulakis in Mariupol and Dimitris Dochtsis in Odessa continue to carry out their work under particularly difficult conditions.
It is noted that, as Greek diplomatic sources reported yesterday, the vast majority of the Greek expatriate community in Ukraine has chosen to stay in the country.
Operation "Nostos 3" is the third evacuation operation coordinated by the Greek Foreign Ministry for the evacuation of civilians from Ukraine.
It was preceded by operation "Nostos 1", coordinated by the Foreign Ministries of Greece and Cyprus for the evacuation of Greek and Cypriot citizens from Kiev, as well as the evacuation operation "Nostos 2", organized by the Consulate General of Greece in Odessa.
