Saudi authorities shut down thousands of abandoned wells after Rayan's death

Saudi Arabia has announced that it has "closed and sealed" nearly 2,500 abandoned wells in the country, after the tragic death of little Rayan, who remained trapped for five days at the bottom of a well in Morocco.

"To guarantee the safety of all (), the Ministry was able to close and seal 2.450 abandoned wells," Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said in a Twitter message on Sunday. The ministry "continues to work to close the remaining wells" that pose a risk, it added.

The authorities further asked residents to inform officials of any dangerous or uncovered wells. "Your alerts will protect you, you and others," he said."

The announcement was made after the tragic death of Rayan, aged 5 years, who fell into a 32-metre-deep well in Morocco. The rescue operation caused a wave of emotion in the country and worldwide, but ended in tragedy on Saturday, with Moroccan authorities announcing the death of the young boy.
