Because of the rise in infections in many parts of the country, authorities have closed schools in Shanghai and imposed restrictive measures in cities in northeast China.
A lockdown has been imposed on most of Jilin, a megacity of about 3.6 million people, a local official said today. This shows that "the Omicron variant is highly contagious, spreads rapidly and is difficult to detect in the early stages of infection," Zhang Yan, a spokesman for the health authorities of the province of the same name, said at a press conference.
There are 7,230 patients in hospitals in the Chinese mainland, of whom six are intubated, according to Chinese authorities. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,636 deaths due to Covid-19 have been reported in China.
