The Plenary Session of the Parliament unanimously passed the budget of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts for 2022, with MPs noting the importance of the institution and calling for its further strengthening.

The budget of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts for the year 2022 is balanced and foresees expenditure of €372,500 and income of the same amount from state sponsorship.

The budgeted expenditure of the Academy for 2022 includes, among other things, administrative expenses which amount to €325.500 and development costs which amount to €47,000.

DIKO MP Panicos Leonidou said that this academy was established very recently and at first sight the work that has begun to appear is very important. He noted that it is important that there be a greater upgrading of this institution, which contributes greatly to the development of culture, arts and letters and research in which Cyprus is still far behind.

AKEL MP Christos Christofias said that such an institution came to fill a gap that existed in this area. He noted, however, that while the Academy's delegation informed the Education Committee that in order to be developed it asked the Government for €1.2 million, the Government came to cover only €372,500. He also noted that the Academy's housing issue remains a serious outstanding issue.

DISY MP Giorgos Karoullas said that this is the first autonomous budget of this institution that sets the conditions for it to operate and carry out its mission, which is a result of the reform started by the present Government in 2015.

DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis said that the Academy, which has now entered the implementation stage, is a wealth for the country. He added that with the 400 thousand euros or so included in the budget, it has started its journey and hoped that through its work it will convince the parliament and the state that more money is needed.

The MP of DISPA - Civic Partnership Alekos Tryfonidis said that this is an important institution for the development of sciences, letters and arts. At the same time, he expressed concern as to whether its responsibilities will be intertwined with the responsibilities of the new State Ministry of Culture.

EDEK MP Andreas Apostolou[/B] recalled the recommendation by the President of the Academy Andreas Demetriou to conduct a study on the impact of the pandemic on children, which he described as particularly important and called on the Ministry of Education and the competent bodies to take the baton and proceed to the preparation of such a study.
