The Brazilian Ambassador expressed his support to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem to the President of the Parliament
His country's support to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of a Bi-zonal solution, bicommunal federation, expressed the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Cyprus Eduardo Augusto Ibiapina de Seixas, in a meeting on Wednesday with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou.
The President of the House of Representatives expressed sincere appreciation for Brazil's long-standing principled stance on the Cyprus problem and its efforts to resolve it on the basis of international legitimacy. The desire of the Greek Cypriot side, Demetriou stressed, is the resumption of negotiations, aiming at reunification in conditions of peace, security and prosperity.
Furthermore, Demetriou said that the unfolding crisis in Ukraine touches on the flagrant violation of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of a European country. Cyprus has been suffering for 48 years the painful consequences of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory, the President of the Parliament pointed out, stressing the need to show unity and solidarity as the only possible way to face the challenges that Europe and the world at large are called upon to manage.
In turn, the Brazilian Ambassador, noting his country's long-standing presence in Cyprus and its contribution to UNFICYP, underlined his country's firm commitment to the principles of international law, respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. Mr. Ibiapina de Seixas reaffirmed Brazil's support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation and the rejection of any illegal actions and secessionist statements.
According to a statement by the House of Representatives, during the meeting, a common will was expressed to further strengthen cooperation and exchanges between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Brazil at all levels, particularly through the respective Friendship Groups.
Finally, there was an exchange of views on issues of common interest, such as the climate crisis. The Brazilian Ambassador noted the leading role of Cyprus in efforts to address climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Ms Demetriou underlined the readiness of the Brazilian House of Representatives and the House of Representatives to undertake joint initiatives and actions in areas of common interest.
