Theopeptou's account

In his account of his term of office, the current President of the Ecologists' Movement, Charalambos Theopeptou noted that the biggest challenge they faced was staffing the ballot paper for the parliamentary elections and among the successes he mentioned the election of three MPs for the first time and the assumption of a Chairmanship of a Parliamentary Committee, the Environment Committee. He also noted that he assumed the presidency of the movement in the fall of 2020 and led the campaign for the May 2021 Parliamentary elections.

"The high abstention rate, the first time such a large percentage of votes that went to parties that did not enter parliament, the aggression of the media and the lack of thematic debates where we could present our positions, the violation of legislation and many other things led us to this result." Two of the MPs who were elected, he added, became members of the Movement after their election.

Theopeptou said that in order to avoid the problems and difficulties in preparing the ballot paper for the Parliamentary elections, the preparation of cadres to run for the 2024 municipal elections should begin now to begin. Already, he added, he has begun preparatory work with a group of young people, but everyone should help.

"We need a serious effort to promote our frontline cadres to showcase their knowledge and gain visibility."

Theopeptou also referred to the need for training of executives, noting that the European Greens have shown interest in some such training programmes, while interest in co-organising them has also been expressed by the Greek Greens.

He spoke of the need to produce a position paper that would be an aid for those who are just starting to engage with their issues and give them the opportunity to discuss and reposition or reaffirm a number of issues that concern them. On this occasion, he added, the Movement's thematic committees will have the opportunity to be better organised and produce work. The staff in their offices also needs reorganization, he added.

Theopeptou spoke of the need to upgrade the Statute in which it does not provide for some kind of Disciplinary Council, the procedures for removing someone from a parliamentary election ballot are lengthy , the information required to become a member of the movement needs to be modernized, and the procedures for removing someone from a parliamentary election ballot are lengthy.etc.

He also mentioned that the Pancyprian Congress should have regulations for handling objections and other unforeseen events during the congress, and he believes that the standards for who is entitled to be President or to participate in elected bodies of the movement should be defined. He advocated the establishment of two co-chairs, a woman and a man, as in all green parties in the EU.

Charalambos Theopeptou said that "in the next 10 years everyone will turn to us. That is why now more than ever we need to prepare ourselves, gain knowledge and work together to upgrade the Movement and its institutions. To prepare our people to be able to come out with knowledge and green policies, To make our party great."

The conference is a hybrid of physical presence and online. Voting is expected to conclude around 3 p.m.
